US claims Iran has seized commercial tanker in Hormuz Strait
According to the statement, the Marshall Islands–flagged M/V Talara was boarded after members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) arrived by helicopter and forced entry onto the ship. CENTCOM said the vessel was subsequently diverted into Iranian territorial waters, where it continues to be held.
A maritime security firm reported that the Talara had been en route from the UAE toward Singapore when it abruptly shifted course in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, turning toward Iranian waters after three small boats approached it roughly 20 nautical miles east of the UAE’s Khor Fakkan.
"Iran's use of military forces to conduct an armed boarding and seizure of a commercial vessel in international waters constitutes a blatant violation of international law, undermining freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce," CENTCOM said, urging Tehran "to articulate to the international community the legal basis for its actions."
Iranian officials have not yet commented on the incident.
